What is Closed Captioning?
Captioning is the taking the audio content of video files and turning it into text files that can be read on-screen. Put simply, you’ll watch television a all day and type out correctly everything you hear.
Those files are then turned into the sub-titles that are synced to the video. If you’re expected to type out the text directly in the video editing software, you’ll also have to sync the audio to the video.
Who’s it For?
- Anyone who can listen and type correctly
- Anyone who can spend long periods watching video
- Anyone with good language skills
Skills
- Reading and writing fluency
- Good listening and comprehension
- Good knowledge of local accents
Start Up
If you have a decent computer and a good internet connection, you’re ready to roll. A headset is better to keep you focused and be aware that some companies do real-time captioning for direct television. It will pay better, but you’ll need a higher skillset.
How You Make Your Money
Top captioners can earn between 1 and 2 thousand per month with flexible working hours. Payments are often weekly, so you won’t have to keep waiting until the end of the month to get your cash in the bank.
Try these companies: Caption Max, Caption Media Group, Vitac, National Captioning Institute, Rev, Caption Star.
That should be enough to get you up and running, but once you have enough experience you can also look for remote jobs on job sites.
